La Société de Lecture est heureuse de vous convier à une rencontre avec Philip Mansel.
Dr Philip Mansel’s books include King of the World: the life of Louis XIV (Allen Lane, 2019/ Ed.fr. Passés Composés, 2020). He is President of the Scientific Committee of the Research Center of the Palace of Versailles.
Louis XIV saw himself as a second Alexander the Great as well as King of France. He conquered territory in Flanders and the Rhineland, hoped to make a French prince King of Poland and made his grandson King of Spain. He also planned to conquer Syria, Egypt, and Siam, founded colonies in India and Africa, bombarded cities from Brussels to Algiers, annexed the Mississippi valley and sent French missionaries to the court of Beijing. Versailles was a global hub, built to impress visitors from all corners of the world as well as France.
